What are Cartagena’s Independence Festivities and why are they celebrated?
On November 11, 1811, Cartagena became the first city in present-day Colombia to declare absolute independence from the Spanish Crown. The city has celebrated ever since with parades, cabildos, drums, popular pageants and music in the streets. It is the most important date on Cartagena’s calendar and, unlike many events aimed at visitors, the stars here are the people from the neighborhoods.
In July 2026, Colombia’s National Heritage Council approved the festivities’ Special Safeguarding Plan and their inclusion on the national list of Intangible Cultural Heritage, El Universal reported. The final resolution from the Ministry of Culture was still pending at that point, so expect locals to be extra proud this year.

October preludes: the party in the neighborhoods
The preludes are the best way to see the festivities as locals live them, with sound systems (picós), champeta and drums in neighborhood squares. The locality preludes take place in residential areas well away from the tourist circuit; if you go, go with a local and use a taxi both ways. For a first taste, the drum night on October 23 at Plaza de los Coches, next to the Clock Tower, is the easiest option.
November 11: Independence Day
This is the anniversary itself. The day is more ceremonial: a solemn City Council session, the reading of the Act of Independence and a floral tribute at the Camellón de los Mártires and Plaza de la Trinidad in Getsemaní. It is a great day to explore the Old Town with a festive vibe but without the Bando crowds.

November 12: Grand Independence Parade (Bando)
This is the highlight: around 10,000 performers, including 45 dance groups and some 40 comparsas according to the Mayor’s Office, parade along Avenida Santander, the seafront road between the northern neighborhoods and the Old Town. The official time is 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m., but locals know it runs late.
November 13 and 14: Nautical Festival and Bololó del Arsenal
The stage sits over the bay facing Calle del Arsenal in Getsemaní, next to the Convention Center. From the street you can watch for free on giant screens; from the water, you watch from boats and catamarans anchored in front of the stage. Juan Luis Guerra headlines Friday the 13th, with Grupo Niche, Beéle, Rafa Pérez and Criss y Ronny; on Saturday the 14th the lineup includes Silvestre Dangond, Nicky Jam, Ryan Castro, Jessi Uribe and Koffe el Kafetero. Set times had not been published yet.
Why stay in Bocagrande during the festivities?
Bocagrande is the peninsula of beachfront towers south of the Old Town, with its own beach, Avenida San Martín lined with restaurants and supermarkets, and the Nao and Plaza Bocagrande malls. During the festivities it has three clear advantages: you are about 10 minutes by taxi from the venues without sleeping next to the stages, you can mix partying with beach days, and there is a wide range of places to stay, from vacation apartments to big hotel chains.
Bocagrande has also traditionally been the base of Colombia’s National Beauty Pageant: in 2025 the candidates stayed at the Hilton in El Laguito, where they also held the swimsuit show and the traditional photo on the hotel beach. If you stay nearby, you may well cross paths with the queens’ caravan.

How do you get from Bocagrande to the events?
- Taxi: the minimum fare in 2026 is COP 12,250, with a COP 1,100 night surcharge from 7:00 p.m. to 5:00 a.m. (Cartagena Mayor’s Office, February 2026). Drivers often charge more on concert nights, so agree on the fare before getting in or use a ride app.
- Transcaribe: a ride costs COP 3,900 since January 2026. Useful by day; at night and on parade days routes may be diverted.
- On foot: from northern Bocagrande you can walk along the coast to the Old Town in about 30-40 minutes. With temperatures above 30 °C (86 °F), go early or around sunset.
- Road closures: Avenida Santander closes on Bando day. Leave at least an hour early and ask the driver to drop you before the closure.
Where is the best place to watch the Grand Independence Parade?
- Grandstands on the city walls (Old Town): paid seats with some shade and better views. Ideal with kids or older travelers.
- Avenida Santander around El Cabrero and Marbella: free, at street level. Local guides say the closer to Marbella, the smaller the crowd.
- End of the route: the parade finishes around Parque de la Marina, at the entrance to Bocagrande. If you don’t want to cross the city, this is the closest option to your hotel.
Wear clothes you don’t mind ruining, plus a cap, water and sunscreen. Although the decree bans throwing foam or water without consent, cornstarch and foam fly freely among those who join in.
How can you enjoy the Nautical Festival from land or water?
On land, Calle del Arsenal and the surrounding streets fill up from the afternoon: arrive early, stay near a screen and agree on a meeting point with your group, because mobile signal gets overloaded. On the water, several operators sell spots on boats, catamarans and yachts; one advertised a full-day package at COP 1,000,000 per person. Only book with companies holding a valid National Tourism Registry (RNT) number, ask for life jackets and confirm the return time to the dock (usually La Bodeguita, opposite the Clock Tower).

What should you watch out for: safety, rules and prices?
The Mayor’s Office issued Decree 0439 of 2026 with public-order rules for all festival activities. The essentials for visitors:
- No glass: carrying or drinking alcohol in glass containers is banned at official events.
- No foam or water without consent: throwing water, foam, dye or bags at people or vehicles who don’t want to play is prohibited.
- Fireworks: banned without a special permit from the city’s Interior Department.
- Closing time: bars, clubs and restaurants serving alcohol must close at 4:00 a.m.
- Crowds: carry a copy of your passport and leave the original in the safe, keep your phone out of your back pocket and carry little cash, in small bills.
- Heat: temperatures often top 30 °C (86 °F); stay hydrated and seek shade between 11:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m.
- Prices: hotels, taxis and boats get pricier over the November 14-16 holiday weekend. Book now and always ask the price before ordering.
- Street “tolls”: private individuals are not allowed to block streets to collect festive “tolls”; if it happens, don’t argue and keep going.
